This stunning piece was designed by internationally renowned Pilsen muralist Hector Duarte. Known more for his electrifying narrative murals ripe with metaphor, including “Gulliver in Wonderland” painted on his own home and studio near the National Museum of Mexican Art, Duarte created “Ice Cream Dream” on commission through the CTA’s Arts-in-Transit program. The mosaic is a great visual embodiment of magical realism popular in Mexican literature: A butterfly migration representing the movement of people across national borders and throughout Chicago is expressed as a wave of energy, while Pilsen itself is depicted as the beating heart of the city.
