Neighborhood Trail: Lakeshore East

Built on land that didn’t exist prior to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (it was formed by lakefill) and that served industrial uses for decades, Lakeshore East is a 28-acre neighborhood created by Magellan Group with the aid of a visionary Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) master plan. Anchored by the award-winning Park at Lakeshore East, in the last 15 years surrounding parcels have steadily filled in with a variety of residential towers with several thousand new households. It deserves a lot of credit for the residential boom that has only accelerated in downtown Chicago in subsequent years, transforming the city center city into a dynamic 24-hour community. The development also embraced bold architectural design in many respects. Lakeshore East extends out from Illinois Center and completes important connections to the pedway system and lakefront. Start this tour in the park from where you’ll find good vantage points to take in the other sites. Photo by Adam Bernstein
